With fall coming up and the holiday season around, that means it's time to take those annual family portraits! And for those of you who live in Southern California, the beach is a POPULAR spot- particularly sunset! 

Take for instance, the E. Family. This particular family photo session was taken in Oceanside, CA during the fall. You may think photo sessions that take place in autumn would be cold, overcast, and just plain ugly... but not so in Southern California! We're known for our year-round summer-like weather which makes taking pictures at the beachfront truly a memorable moment for you and your loved ones!

But for many families (especially with little ones) however, it might strike a little bit of anxiety planning for this... BUT TAKE HEART! Here are my top five tips to have a great beach family session:

1. LOCATION MATTERS

Choose a spot that your kids have the freedom to run and explore (don’t worry, you’ll still be able to get awesome shots!) but at the same time not too crowded with other visitors. If you need help with finding a spot, I certainly have recommendations!

2. TIMING IS EVERYTHING

We want to avoid harsh lighting and excessive heat. The best times to take photos at the beach is during “golden hour” which is an hour to an hour and a half before the sun sets. So have a light dinner beforehand and bring some snacks in case your loved ones get hungry.

3. PLANNING IS KEY

Make sure everyone in your family is made aware of the time and date of your session within a reasonable amount of time. I highly recommend informing your family at least a week prior to our time together that way everyone is informed and not caught off guard.

4. DRESS FOR SUCCESS

What you confidently wear will translate onto the pictures. Solid colors work best and are the least distracting. Avoid clothing with graphics, logos, and writing. If you need help with wardrobe suggestions, I’d be happy to help!

5. LET LOOSE AND HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIVES

Last but certainly not least- HAVE A BLAST! If your kids (or husband) love frolicking in the water, let them! This is where capturing the priceless joy on their faces comes!
